Chesed Awards

Rudlin Torah Academy is pleased to announce it will honor Susan Adolf and Robert Weisberger, M.D., with the 2010 Chesed Awards.

Adolf is well known in the Jewish community of Richmond as an owner of Saxon Shoes since 1972.

She has served on the boards of Beth Sholom Home of Virginia, the Weinstein JCC, and the JCFR, among other community leadership positions. She has twice received the President's Award from the Weinstein JCC, and in 2009 received the JCC's Esther, Edith & J.J. Bernstein Volunteer Leadership Award, along with her husband, Ronnie.

Adolf also has been active with the Maccabi Games, BBYO, and Hadassah, and is a life member of Hadassah. Adolf served on the regional board of B'nai B'rith Women and is a life member. She attended J.R. Tucker High School and the University of South Carolina.

Weisberger, a retired emergency room physician with 30 years' experience, teaches at VCU and the Medical College of Virginia. He has long been active in the Jewish community and currently serves as a vice president of the JCFR, as well as a board member of both the JCFR and Richmond Jewish Foundation. He also has been medical director of the Richmond Maccabi Games.

Weisberger was an emergency room physician for the Bon Secours hospitals in Richmond, and was instrumental in setting up the emergency room when St. Francis Medical Center opened. He went to medical school at New York Medical College, did his residency at MCV, and received a Master of Science in Health Administration at VCU.

He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Maimonides Society of Richmond in 2008 and a President's Award in 2005 from the JCFR. The ABCD (Above & Beyond the Call of Duty) Award will be presented to Rivka Bart and Rabbi Yosef Bart for outstanding support of RTA through their volunteer efforts.

The Alumni of the Year Award will be given to Michele Hampton, who serves on the board and directs ad sales for the Chesed Journal. RTA also recognizes dedicated teachers who have taught at the school for 10 years or more. This year multiple YOD (Years of Dedication) awards are going out to RTA's veteran teachers and staff: Dabney Lewis and Jeannine Corey, each with 10 years of service; and Pauline Carlton, Rabbi Baruch Sherman, and Joan Cantor, each with 20 years.

RTA will bestow the awards at the annual Chesed Awards Dinner on Sunday, June 6, at the Weinstein JCC. The theme of this year's dinner is "Building the Future."

Rudlin Torah Academy is in its 44th year of providing quality full- time elementary education to Jewish children in the Richmond area. It was chartered in 1966 as the Richmond Hebrew Day School. The Academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.
